Course Description

Learn more about the benefits for laser dentistry in saving time (soft tissue management), enhancing dental care (advanced healing, increased visibility, bacterial decontamination, reduction in aerosol) as well as the latest innovations in dental laser technology in support of enhanced patient care, improved operational efficiency and profitable practice growth, including;

  • minimally invasive soft tissue surgeries for general operative dentistry

  • periodontal therapy (hygiene) and surgery

The hands-on segment of the program will give participants an opportunity to experience the functionality of lasers performing surgical procedures on in-vitro models. Live demonstration and video guiding the clinical simulation will incorporate the relevance of settings and technique for optimized clinical outcomes.  This interactive experience will also facilitate an open dialogue between participants and one on one with the instructor, comprising clinical & practical considerations for the successful implementation of dental laser technology. Attendees will have the opportunity to perform various clinical procedures, including;​

  • Different Techniques; for incision/excision, coagulation, disinfection & healing

  • Operative Dentistry Including; tissue troughing, fibroma/biopsy, gingivectomy, frenectomy, vestibuloplasty, aphthous ulcers, periodontal therapy, surgical flap procedures, de-epithelialization & more!

  • Laser safety considerations, settings, care, sterilization protocols & system maintenance.

An Institute for Laser Dentistry Certification Program 

Attendees who complete the program will have met the requirements for ILD Standard Proficiency Certification. 

Course Objectives

  • a basic introduction to the science, fundamentals, functionality, operational characteristics, technique, and benefits of dental laser technology including an overview of all wavelengths and the importance of wavelength selection

  • a basic understanding of the range of clinical indications for use for general and specialty dentistry including minimally invasive soft tissue surgeries for general dentistry 

  • an overview of current innovations in laser dentistry including; lasers and implants, treatments for peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis, minimally invasive treatments for snoring and minimally invasive facial aesthetics 

  • an overview of considerations for successful implementation including education, marketing and ROI considerations

Alternative Lecturers for the Innovations Programs

Dr. Dana Colson is a 1977 graduate of the University of Toronto, Dr. Colson uniquely combines leading edge technology with natural medicine. She implemented one of the first C02 surgical lasers in general dentistry in Canada and routinely uses multiple wavelengths in daily practice for restorative, perio and aesthetic procedures. She  received her MBA in 2016 and is an accredited member of IAOMT and a multiple level graduate of KOIS and the Pankey Institute. She is a Fellow in the AGD an author of “Your Mouth; The Gateway to a Healthier You”.

Dr. Scott Parker Since 1998, Dr. Parker has educated thousands of clinicians across the US and internationally. In that time, he has advocated for increased standards in aesthetic and restorative procedures, minimally invasive techniques, and dental technology. He is a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry and has over 15 years of experience using dental lasers in general practice.  He is a member of  the ADA, American Society for Dental Aesthetics (accredited), and The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is actively engaged as a leader in research associated with lasers and sleep disorder dentistry

Dr. Ian Raskin is a 1984 graduate of the University of Toronto and past president of the Canadian chapter of the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD).  He has ALD Advanced Proficiency standing in multiple wavelengths and over 30 years of practical clinical experience using multiple dental lasers for general surgeries, periodontal treatments, restorative and aesthetic procedures. Dr. Raskin has taught minimally invasive laser dentistry throughout North and South America as well as Europe, since 1995. He maintains a full time practice in North York, ON with an emphasis on restorative and implant dentistry.  He is a Fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantology and has successfully placed thousands of implants.  He has completed extensive advanced level surgical and implant training programs including multiple advanced level programs with Dr. Frank Spear, Dr. Carl Misch, Dr. Michael Pikos and Dr. Marius Steigmann.  He is considered a subject matter expert in minimally invasive laser dentistry including general dentistry, periodontal surgery and surgical implantology.

Christopher Schmid is the Director of Research & Education for ILD With over 25 years of experience in the medical and dental laser education education markets. He authors the fundamental educational curriculum for the Institute for Laser Dentistry Certification Programs, is responsible for training the ILD Clinical Trainers and has mentored and trained hundreds of dentist's chair side. He has worked with every available wavelength in dentistry and has been instrumental in collaborating with some of the worlds most experienced dental specialists to perfect techniques for minimally invasive dental laser procedures. Christopher remains at the forefront of innovations in laser dentistry and is an honorary member of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorder Disciplines working with Key Opinion Leaders and subject matter experts in the field of airway disorders and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).  His expertise also comprises current innovations in the area of minimally invasive facial aesthetics as a compliment to cosmetic dental procedures.
